Baked Apples and Cranberries (Paleo, Naturally Sweetened)

I live for the time of year when it becomes acceptable for me to start posting apples again. I LOVE it. They’re my favorite fruit to eat and cook with, and they’re so delicious all on their own that you can make a great recipe with them using only a few complementary ingredients. Apples are my homies.

I threw cranberries in this baked apple dish on a whim, and am so happy that I did! The slightly bitter taste works perfectly against the sweet apples, and it an especially delicious treat with ice cream or whipped cream. These Baked Apples will be on my Christmas menu this year for sure!

Low-Sugar Baked Apple Dessert

This baked apple dish is sweetened with only two tablespoons of coconut sugar (you can use honey, maple syrup, or regular sugar if desired) and is otherwise completely naturally sweetened! You can even omit the sugar and you’ll still have a delightfully sweet cinnamon apple dish. I eat it reheated for breakfast with a protein shake or it also makes a great indulgent dessert with some vanilla ice cream. Make extra and keep it in the fridge to enjoy throughout the week 🙂

Ingredients and substitutions for Baked Apples and Cranberries

One thing I love about baked fruit dishes is how easy they are to throw together with what you have on hand. No coconut oil? Use butter. No vanilla? It’s ok! Don’t have all of the apples? You can use pears! Here’s what you need to make this dish, but know that you can easily substitute anything.

Apples: I used a mix of gala and opal, but anything will work! I left the skin on my apples but you can peel yours if you’d like
Cranberries: Fresh cranberries, not dried!
Coconut sugar: see notes above for alternative sweeteners, or omit if desired.
Coconut oil: Sub butter or ghee if needed.
Lemon Juice: Just a hint of lemon helps compliment the apples.
Cinnamon: the perfect spice to pair with apples!
Nutmeg: Nutmeg and cinnamon combine for the perfect cozy spiced fruit dish.

Can I use pears instead of apples?

Absolutely! You can use all pears or half pears and half apples depending on what you have on hand. You can also use persimmons if desired!
