How One Investment can Change Your Career

Feb 23, 2021 | Creative Business, Food Photography

Investing in yourself is scary, especially when you’re brand new at creative business and you haven’t seen how much investing in yourself can change the trajectory of your career.

But what if I told you that an investment of just a few hundred dollars could do just that: change your whole career and catapult you from working 9-5 to running the 6 or 7 figure business of your dreams? That’s what a few small investments did for me.

I remember back when I had first started my food photography business. I was absolutely in love with it, but I was burning the candle at both ends between my agency job and my own business. I was making good money, but not enough to make my business my full-time gig. Every time I needed to put money into my new business I felt a bit in my stomach, whether it was a few hundred dollars for a new lens or even $12 for a photo delivery service.

One day I stumbled upon a Foodtography School Masterclass for restaurant photography and was totally drawn into the content. I learned so many ways I could grow my business and turn it into my full-time job instead of the juggling act I was tiring way at. At the end of the class, they opened up registration for Restaurant Foodtography School. I was so nervous to put the money into it, but ultimately I did, and I’ve never looked back. Within a few months I had earned back my investment several times over, and the simple act of investing in myself that one time gave me the fire and the confidence to really make my own business work. Now I run a 6-figure Photography and Marketing business out of New York City; a business built by repeatedly betting on myself and investing in my potential.

Now I don’t blink when it comes to investments. I’ll easily spend $2-3 K on a learning opportunity if I know it’ll motivate me to work smarter and teach me tools that I can use to grow my business. Investing in yourself is scary when you’re new at business, but once you’re a professional you learn that investing in yourself is a key part of growth, and you do it on a regular basis.

Why Investing In Yourself Is So Effective

One of the best things you can do as a creative business owner is invest real dollars into the growth of your skills. But why is it so effective? Two big reasons:

  1. Putting money on the line gets your head in the game. It gives you something to make back and a reason to get serious about finding where your next paycheck is coming from. It also gives you an extra confidence boost when you bet on yourself and your own potential. In short, it helps you to think better and work smarter.
  2. It fast-tracks your success and helps you skip a few pitfalls. There are a billion hats to wear and a billion things to learn when you’re in business so why, if given the opportunity, would you not pay to have someone teach you some of those things so you don’t have to learn them the hard way? Yes, you can learn just about anything on Google, but it’s much smarter to spend your time actually making money than Googling things that you could learn by paying for a course or mentor.  When it comes to photography, I think it is beneficial to invest in learning concrete rules about lighting, composition, and creative business, which are all things that make your photos better and worth more.

Small Investments Can Change Everything.

It’s also worth noting that you can start small with your investments. Even just a few hundred dollars could dramatically change your business as it did for me.
