The Maui Dairy: Beaches

Jul 18, 2019 | Travel

I grew up in New England, so I thought I had seen some pretty great beaches in my life. But Maui was perfection! The sand was soft, the surf was great, there were plenty of quiet private beached to hang out on, and there were TURTLES. Omgosh. Turtles are my third favorite animal, so I was ecstatic. I’m not a die-hard beach person who loves to lay in the sun for forever, but I really enjoyed every minute we spent either on the sand or in the surf. There are so many great beaches to choose from, too! We tried a few different ones while we were there. If you visit Maui, definitely try all of these, and be sure that you don’t miss Maluaka!

Kamaole I – We paddle-boarded in front of Kam I and I felt like the surf was less choppy than at Kam II. The beach looked a bit less rocky, too.

Kamaole II – This was across the street from our Condo, and it was the perfect “base” beach to stop at when we didn’t want to drive.  Good surf, soft sand, and not too crowded!

Maluaka – The SOFTEST sand ever! We saw turtles at the landing and then walked across this beach while the sun set. It was so wonderful that we had to stop back on our last day for our beach finale. It’s a great quiet beach to hang out at.

Ho’okipa – This is definitely the most crowded beach we went to, but worth the stop if you like surfing and turtles! It’s up in Paia and you can often see big groups of sea turtles hanging out in the sand.

Wailea – If you want to feel fancy, this is the beach to go to. It’s right down in front of the resorts, and connects to a beautiful waterfront path that we enjoyed walking along. If you’re hungry/thirsty you can grab a snack at the Four Seasons Beachwalk Cafe which is right on the beach. It also has great surf!

Black Sand Beach – We stopped here on the road to Hana. If you camp along Hana, this would be a really fun, secluded beach to spend a long time splashing around at! And yes, the sand really is black!

Beaches we didn’t get to but that looked great: Big Beach, Olowalu.
